The fight between two memories

    About the Artwork

In this painting, two memories are represented in the form of birds (for their fleeting nature) flying around a landscape of dendritic branches (neurons) with synapses (where the connections between neurons take place and memories are stored). Flowers grow in those synapses that hold memories. The two birds, a colorful hummingbird and a dark raven, symbolise two opposing qualities of memory that fight each other: one positive and uplifting, one negative and threatening.

Neurons connect with each other through synapses: small spaces between these cells that allow for information transmission in the form of chemical and electrical exchanges. Synapses are crucial for the brain's plasticity, and are the basis of memories in the brain. In my paintings, memories are represented as fleeting birds and flowers floating around the shapes of neurons and synapses.
